Final morning in Vancouver.

I just woke up at 5 and have been preparing the next few days. I've just checked our flight status and our plane is still on time and should be leaving here at 20h05. Touching down in Amsterdam at aprox. 16h30.

What's up for the rest of the day. This morning breakfast and check out at 11h (they can keep our luggage until 16h). At 16h we take the cab to the airport. Between 11 and 16 we go and visit a museum (and have a decent lunch somewhere).

------------------------------------------------------

Well we are home sinds a week and it's time to make the final entry in this blog/report. Last Friday we spend our time walking around in Vancouver. There was some kind of plan but we more or less didn't respect it.  The museum we wanted to visit, well we did not find it. So we went on for a walk through Chinatown and an extended walk around the harbor. To finish it of we walked back to the city center where Loic had 2 more pancakes (and I bought a last souvenir). Back to the hostel to pick up our stuff .... but Loic had a last stop at a CD/DVD shop so I had to wait for him in the hostel. Loic managed to buy some more Cd's (and even to lose them for a while). but we left the hostel on time and got into a cab for the airport (35 dollars). The check in was like always a problem. We both had to much weight in our bags. I had 25kg (after removing Loic his stuff it was 23.6kg) and Loic was at almost 28kg. And then it was time for dinner. We are leaving Vancouver around 20h. There is a stop in Calgary and once we left there, there will be dinner on the plane (around 00h) so we had something to eat on the airport. Once arrived at the gate it was a strange feeling to hear some Dutch.

The flight home was nice. We were seated next to a girl from Rotterdam and to please Loic we spoke the whole trip in English (she didn't want to try her French).

And then back in Amsterdam we had our cabdriver waiting for us. Manu came to pick us us at the airport in Schiphol. The trip home was due to 'roadwork’s' (yes even here they follow us) a nightmare. We were stuck in a major trafic jam so our driver got really all pleased with the joy of ....

Back home in Mesen around 21h30 after dropping of Loic at the Kine. We landed in Amsterdam at 16h. The traffic jam + détour has taken us 30 minutes. It seemed much longer when we were in it.

The trip is over. It was great fun but like last year we wanted to do way to much in way to little time. It is a country where I will go back one day. But only for a smaller portion east or west coast).

Vancouver, once again. Today Loic and I had only 1 thing we had to do. We had to return the car. So we went to drop of our nice little car in some big hotel in downtown Vancouver. I do not know how I did it but the drop of was perfect. A 2 minutes drive from our hostel and in the city center so afterwards we were perfectly placed to visit the center. The windshield of the car was not a problem. The man at the counter said that we had nothing to pay, it was included in the price.

The rest of the day was just relaxing. I showed Loic some of the city center and went to look for souvenirs. After 5 shops I still had nothing and Loic had bought something in all 5. We split at the HMV store. Where I bought nothing and Loic . . .stayed for 2h and bought plenty. I went to the harbor area to have a relaxing afternoon and so did Loic afterwards. We both were at the harbour just not the same one.

Last thing we did tonight was preparing the boxes Loic will send back, I do think we have some problems checking our lugages in. Overweight is not only a problem with big Americans, it's also a problem with Loic his luggage’s.

October 07

Vancouver island, this morning when I woke up it was a lovely morning. The sky was clear and everything looked great. So I woke up Loic at 7h30... We were able to leave the motel around 8h45 and drove off to Tofino. Tofino is normally a lovely town (more info) but all we saw was a white fog. So we did not stay that long in this small town. We headed back on the road to the junction to Nanaimo. On the road we had a few stops. Old Radar hill, a few beaches and a walk through the rainforest. It gave us the impression we should have stayed a few days longer here. If you go and have a look at the pictures you will understand why. As often we had an excellent weather for this trip. Very sunny and a superb view over the sea. At some point we even spotted a whale passing by. The 6 hours that we had there were really too short. But we had to go back and catch our ferry back to the main land.

The trip back to the hotel was annoying but I found it with my eyes almost closed. It was an early stop tonight Loic was tired (spend Tuesday evening correcting the French part of this blog). So light out around 10 'o clock. When you wake up at 4h30 it's quite a long day.

Special for October 07

A "Happy birthday" wish to Lucie!

October 06

Vancouver Island is where we are heading to today. We left this morning around 5,30 o'clock Vancouver and drove towards the harbor where we would catch the ferry. We somehow got the B road to the harbor so we had a lot of small roads. But we made it in time to catch the ferry (we had to wait quite some time before we could board the vessel). This is the most recent boat they have in their fleet. The thing was build in 2007 and is so to speak brand new. But it is also to big. They use only 60% of its capacity. The trip took a big half an hour so at 10 we were on Vancouver Island (harbour of Nannaimo). We are a little bit short in time so we had to chose a few highlights. Loic chose the west coast, so we had to drive a 200km through the inland of the island. Splendid views were part of the trip, but the whole thing has taken us longer than suspected. Tomorrow we will need to leave this region around 14h to catch the boat back to Vancouver.

For today it has been hiking around the west coast in the town Ucluelet. Our Motel is also on the internet (more info).

Tomorrow: we visit 'The long beach' and the town of Tofino.

Just a small remarque. Loic and I are getting fed up by sitting in our car (almost 10000km in 5 weeks) so now when we have to stop for construction sites we start to talk to the people with the stop signs. It is not a great discution but they alway are very surprised people talk to them.

Octobre 06

Vancouver, version light

Today I was waiting for the arrival of Loic. He spend the second day of his train and I spend the day walking through Vancouver. That way I had a better view over the town. The stupid thing was that I more or less had to walk around the famous things. Those things I will visit with Loic Thursday and Friday. For my part I had a very lovely day. Wondering around. Having a coffee on a terras. Taking time to have a decent lunch. Even had time to wonder around in some shops (audio hardware and music).

Loic finally arrived at the hotel at 18h15 so we went out to have a beer (and he had something to eat). I'm starting to eat what is left in my supply box. We are getting close to the end of this trip.

Vancouver, version light

Arrived at Vancouver!

This morning I dropped of Loic at the trainstation at 6h45. I somehow had the impression Loic was not a 100% awake. He will be spending the next 2 days on the Rocky Mountaineer (more info). While I was preparing this entry on the blog I saw "a culinary moment". People who know Loic will know what I'm talking about.

My part of the day was quite differend. I went back to the hotel, had a few cups of coffee and prepared my trip down to Vancouver. I checked out around 8h30 and started driving. Now that Loic isn't with me in the car I was able to play the music hard. It keeps me focused quit well. Where normaly I somedays feel asleep after 2 our 3 driving today I did not feel a thing. Maybe the superbe scenery was into it for a thing. I do apolegize for the lousy pictures. It's not easy to drive (speeding the whole trip), try to see police controls and in the mean time enjoy the scenery, while taking pictures. I think my planning was quit okay. I only had 1 problem during the trip. Leaving Kamloops I could go left and right to go to Vancouver . . . sometime you just hate the way they put the roadsigns.

The arrival in Vancouver was the worst part in this whole holiday. Roadconstruction so I spend half an hour over the last 15km before entering Vancouver. Getting the car parked was also some fun. Our little car does not fit in small place so I had to park it underground, got a ticket till 6 this morning (and I need to go and see how I can pay for the rest of the day now...

We are staying at the Hi-Vancouver (more info)

October 03

Today was normally a short day. Both Loic and I were planning a day of rest. For today we only had 3 things planned. Miette Hot springs, Pyramid lake and Mount Edith Cavell. Well the Hot springs where the first thing we wanted to visit but due to bad road conditions we had to return before arriving (pictures and video on the picture page). At Pyramid Lake it felt like -20°C. The road to Mount Edith was closed sinds the first of September.

All thing add up we had a nice day of rest. Almost got stuck in the ice/snowy road. Had a good cold nose at a nice lake but spend most time relaxing. As always, Loic relaxed in the shops and I had a good book (and a good nap).

Coming up next.

Tomorrow: I drive to Vancouver (and I can play the music loud in the car Yeah Baby!). Loic spends lots of money on The Rocky Mountaineer.

Next week we are going home, tonight Loic tried already how to pack everything in his bag. Not everything is entering in his bag and Loic has the solution to dump it in mine ...I warned him if I go overweight for the flight back he's going to pay for it!

Octobre 03

Jasper in X-mas mood.

It may become time to leave the Rockies. Today we spend some time in the area around Jasper. First of all we went to the train station to see where Loic had to go Sunday morning at 6h45. Loic also had a stop at the information center. I know that on this website there are sometimes some strange translations but at the entrance of the information center there was one that made us smile (and it may even be the correct translation). The picture is on the picture page.

After a little while we left for our last great walk at the Maligne lake. On the road to there we had a stop at Mystery Lake. This has nothing to do with a Loch Ness animal but all with the fact that this lake has no exit. You have streams getting into the lake but nothing that is leaving.

Maligne lake was the location for our last great walk. We hiked up the mountain to get a nice view over the lake but after half an hour it began to snow. It is nice to hike that way but it is also getting really cold. The view from the mountain top was a little white but we were able to enjoy our trip. On the way back we took a detour to walk up to the lake and have a nice view of that thing also. At a certain time I had lost Loic. Now knowing that he was only a few hundred meters behind me this doesn't scare me. But this time he had a long delay. 40 minutes after me Loic arrived at the car. He had met 2 French people so had started to talk.

On the way back to our Motel we had lots of melting snow but also a superb view of a couple animals by the road. At 2 minutes walk from the town of Jasper you can see wild life. Tonight due to bad weather, we had dinner in the restaurant of our hotel.

Octobre 02

Banff to Jasper

Today was one of the last rout trips that we had to make. When you look at the map (clique here) we were back heading north. We are not sure if this our Manic 5 is the most northern point of our trip. Either way, both are completely different and even the scenery between Banff and Jasper is completely different. The 250km took us quit some time. There were e few photos stops ( Weeping Wall Viewpoint) and also stops at the Columbia Ice field Center. At this point we had a walk towards the Toe of the Athabasca Glacier. Quit a nice view and quit a steep walk. The 2 hours we spend there were quit nice.  On the road to Jasper we had 2 more stops. 1 at the Athabascar Falls and another one at the Sunwapta Falls. We could have made another 25.000 stops to take even more pictures. The trip through the Rockies is just so amazing. This is really one of the To Do things in Canada.

Once arrived in Jasper began our search for a room. Given the bad surprise in Banff we were more or less expecting expensive rooms. But we were able to find a rather cheap one (99$) at this place (more info). And sinds it has been a while that we went out to eat tonight we went out for dinner. Loic had to eat in a hurry, he wanted to go and see a movie at 21h. So it had to be quick, and that was not really the case.

Octobre 01

Septembre 30

On today’s program: snow, cold, superb views

Good morning to you all. Today was once again a superb day. There was sun, some very freezing wind and some local drops. Today we took a part of the road that will take us to Jasper. We have been visiting all the surrounding towns of Banff and today we went more North. We were supposed to go directly to Peyto Lake but when we arrived near the crossing of highway 1 and 93 we saw a train heading to the spirals we visited yesterday. So we made the detour and had an even better view then yesterday (sunny weather makes a difference). Before the installation of this loops there was "The Big Hill" (more info) From there on we took our car and drove to Peyto Lake (more info). On our road was also Hector Lake and Crowfoot (so we took a few pictures) but the view of Lake Peyto is breath taking (the freezing cold is also breath taking). In this park you have 9 months a year snow. Next stop, a hiking tour at Bow Lake to go and see the waterfalls. This 10km hike takes you around the lake into the 'wilderness'. This is a less traveled walk. It is a great walk to do but it is somehow out of reach of most tourists. The big advantages is due to that you can walk in peace. You don't see much tourist (as you arrive late like us everybody is already on the way back when we start) so the whole place was for us. Once arrived a the end of the track Loic wanted to go a little further and as always on those moment we fix a hour where we meet at the car. This time he would only go on for 5 more minutes. So I returned slowly back to the start of the walk. I do know that when I hike I am silent. Best way to see and hear animals but now I was in for a big surprise. I rounded a corner and what did I see 10m from me a nice big bear. At such a moment you just think 'shit a bear what to do now' and I think the bear thinks 'shit a human, RUN!'. Before I had time to realize what really happened the bear ran away and I didn't even have the reaction to take a picture.

So for those who want to know, yes there are bears here and yes you can meet them while your hiking.

The best part of this trip is that we were able to see that animal, we were able to have a lovely walk in a calm area and we did it for the most part with some very light snowfall.

On the way back we did an extra stop at the Kootenay National Park. In this park there was a fire in 1968 that destroyed a huge part of this park and now they let nature do its job. There is a policy about fires in National Parks. As long that the fire don’t come near houses, roads, railways they let it burn. When it comes near infrastructure they end it. This creates a younger forest. The most common reason for fire in the woods is lighting strikes.

Coming up: Today was our last day in Banff. Tomorrow we'll be heading to Jasper. A 250km trip (or so). On Sunday Loic will board the rocky Mountaineer for a 2 day trip by train to Vancouver. We'll meet again in Vancouver on Monday (evening). Tuesday morning we take the ferry to Vancouver island (national park) for a 2 day speed visit and on Wednesday evening we take the boat back to Vancouver where Thursday morning we need to return the car. The next 3 days will be quit relaxed just before we enter the great finale.

Septembre 30
Septembre 29

lowest temperature till now "+5°"

Got your attention no? Today we were met by a little melting snow. The temperature in the afternoon dropped to +5°C and then you realize it may be getting time to end the trip over here... but first things first. What did we do today... Sinds I already wrote it did rain that means we where hiking today.

Today the major part of the day we spend with Pat et Tom. An American couple that joined us on the trail from Lac Moraine to Lac Consolation. This 2 hour hike is by law a 4 persons hike. The non respect of this can give you a 5000 dollar fine (picture is on the picture page). So we did the walk with this lovely couple. Loic teamed up with Tom and I talked with Pat. Now I'm not sure what Loic talked about but Pat and I spoke about, former and current president, the American social security and lot's more. Quite a lovely walk also. It just wasn't realy Loic his day. Around Lake Consolation you need to julp over a few rocks to get to the lake. All that went fine but after that we stood there talking and by some way Loic managed to get both feed into the water. Pat and Tom where surprised (and worried) but we explained to them that that were things that do happen with Loic. He is sometime a little distracted.

During our trip the weather changed a little. From a very sunny day it went over to a low level grey weather. Not that we really watched it. We had lunch besides the Lake Moraine and had a little friend who helped us cleaning up. (see pictures on website). After our lunch we left for a few little viewpoints along the road. First stop The spiral tunnels. Second Takakkaw Falls and last the stone bridge of Kicking Horse Lodge. Our first stop at the spiral tunnels was one in a hurry. 10 minutes before arriving it began to rain like hell and temperature dropped to 5°C. Quit a difference to what we are used to. Well at the end it came back better but still the temperature didn't rise.

Back to Banff for another lovely evening. We met 2 lovely girls (Victoria and ??) in the kitchen and started talking. Quit a nice evening.

Septembre 29

Rocky Mountains - Lake Louise (more info - more info)

Well, once again we will need to say it was great, it was assume, no words to describe the images and feelings. It's becoming quit hard to write a decent text over what we saw and lived.

This morning we left for 2 hikes. Of those two we only made one (the second one has to be done in groups of 4 due to danger of encountering bears). Arriving at Lake Louise is simply a shock. If you are lucky and you arrive at a good hour (early in the day), the little light you have plays on the water that comes of the mountains (and glaciers). Have a good look at the pictures on this website. Those were taken before noon. After the hiking there was direct sunlight on the water and the effect was less.

Another reason to come here before noon? The trip is almost 16 km (8 up en 8 down). The first part of the trip is nice (2km) around the lake with huge very flat pathways. After that it becomes a dirt track (still a nice one) and most of the people wear hiking gear. For the next 4.2 km you have a decent walk up to the 6 glaciers coffeehouse (where we had our lunch) and then it's off for the last 1.4km, that last part is quit hard (most older people don’t go up till the end). The last 1.4km takes you way up to the basis of the 6 glaciers (you see them from a height) but you are walking on the old glaciers walls. I met a man who had spend the whole morning getting up the hill side. 4 and a half hour. We were up there in 2 and a half (including luch break).

It is just to amazing to view this and we were so lucky to have yet another sunny day. It is really the trip of this year’s vacation (until now). Now for people like my 'little' niece Anna, you can also to this on a horse back. You should check out a trip over here, some parts of the rocky's can be visited by horse. For the richer people among us, there is a nice hotel at the lake. The average age is 74 I think. Not really a place where Loic or I would blend in.

Once back at the lake Loic wanted to rend a canoe. He had half an hour while I enjoyed the sun and shot some pictures for Dominiek.

Back at Banff, it's back to the shop, buying food and having dinner. I am in a strange vegi period..

Rocky Mountains - Banff National Park.

One of the reason why this trip was done was for what we are visiting at this very own moment.

The Rocky Mountains,  for us it was the cherry on the cake, (the light at the end of the tunnel alto that is not a good expression the rest was very nice) . So sinds last Saturday we have arrived in the final lap of our trip. The purpose of this trip is to do some hiking, enjoy the surroundings (and try to keep the budget more or less in hand). For today Sunday 27 that was not a problem. After a decent breakfast we checked out of the expensive room and left for our first trip through the rocky's. I can try to explain to you what the scenery tells us. But it is like mission impossible. I'm not a decent writer and like I explained yesterday to Loic, certain things can't be viewed by pictures. You need the 3 dimension to have the dept in the image. So for all you people out there. You will need to come on over and ha ve a look for yourself. I truly hope that you get the same nice weather that we had. The same calm day when you go up (by cablecar) the 2285m Mont Sulphure (calm in like not to many tourist). For some reason Loic finds always people that hear that he is from France. Even so on the top of a 2285 m high mountain. There he met a lovely young lady who wanted to learn correct English so she went (with her boyfriend) for 6 months to Canada (she has a job here). I only wish more French people did this to learn proper English.

So for today, we spend a few hours in Mont Sulphure (more info) and that we left once the big busses arrived with tourists. We did plan a trip around Tunnel Mountain but changed that after we found a trail extending 'les cheminées des Fées'. In stead of the 30 min walk we were able to do almost a 3h walk without much people around us. In this tourists center that is a luxury.(more info)

Last part of our daytrip was an excursion on lake Minnewanka (more info). Normally I'm not much into little boat trips but here there is not much choice. You can do a whole day of hiking and see 1/10 of what you see on a hour on that boat. Another point is that it is not that expensive (to Canadian standards). The boat trip + getting on the mountain top cost us around 100 dollars (62 euros).

For tonight we sleep in the Banff Beaver Hostel (more info). It has an kitchen so for the next few days we can really eat what we want/cook.

27 septembre
Rocky Mountains - Banff National Park.

Leaving Calgary for the Rocky Mountains.

Today we will leave Calgary and start our trip to the Rocky Mountains. That should not take us that long. 120km or so. The 3 Girls that Loic had as company yesterday evening said it should take us up to 1h to get there. Therefore we add a extra stop for this morning. We are going to a museum. And yes the second one in this trip. It may not be a museum with paintings and stuff but it is a museum (we're barbarians and proud of it ;°)

After that I'm not sure when we will have a connection on the internet. the location we are heading to is a little unknown so don't be surprised if there is a lack of updates in the following days.

What is sure for the next week is that we need to be in Jasper on Sunday morning around 06h30. Loic has to catch a train. From here to then we have a week to walk and enjoy the 3 national parks in between.

So okay we went to the museum and spend some time in it. What should have taken 2h became a 3h visit (because we started to go faster once we saw that 1h per division would take us 9h to do the whole tour. If you have some interest in army stuff the museum is a certaine to do thing in Calgary. We left the museum at 15h and started towards the Rocky Mountains.

In Banff the town was some kind of a surprise to us. Instead of a local national park we have more or less arrived in Chamonix. Many hotels are fully booked so tonight we are sleeping in the 'rich' hotel (more info). This night will cost us just the same amount of the room the previous 2 nights.

For tomorrow we have a cheaper room. Now we only have to decide how long we want to stay in this little town.

26 septembre

Calgary Day!

Today was our day at Calgary. Well it was mine and it still is Loic's. I'm just in from catching a movie and Loic is still out there. We've somehow took it as a day of. Loic woke up after 9 and after that we had breakfast ... all while taking our time to relax. Loic spend last evening correcting the French part of this weblog. I truly hope you guys read some of it. We do not get much feedback from back home.

This morning we took the train to the city. Now I would not call it a train but over here they call it a train so for convenience we'll keep the name train. First problem of the day. 2 Day passes cost 15 dollars and you need to pay those things in coins. Neither of us is a big coin lover. Or we spend them or we lose them some were. That was something that was solved real fast. The train took us to the city center. Calgary is on the map bigger then Winnipeg but they destroyed most of their original buildings. The whole town is a construction site. But the people are nice. We spend a few hours wondering around and in the center of Calgary. After that it was back time to spend some money. Back into the shopping malls. A snack for lunch, the first Subway sinds we are here, A menu here contains a sub 30cm, a soda 1/2l and 2 cookies for 12 dollar (7.2 euro). It is cheaper than in Europe and the taste of everything is a little more pronounced. But that is something in all their food. Do not try the spicy stuff, even the mild version is hot for European standards.

Loic wanted some new gear to go and do some serious hiking in the rocky mountains. It took us some time to find it but he has all new and very serious new equipment. Only downfall the same problem like at the end of our trip in Australia. I had to pay for it. We were also looking for a superb library but that has become a sport shop now. Today I was not in the mood to spend money on stupid things so I went to see a movie. The one I wanted to see was Inglorious Bastards (a perfect film) played in a theater out of town but therefore I had my train pass. I was there in 20 minutes. Downside of the story, I missed the mid afternoon screening so I had to wait 2h before I could enter so I went .... shopping. Spend 1 hour in the bookshop (bought 2 books) and 1h in the cinema trying to get a permission to go and visit the Imax projection. They told me that it was the digital version that was installed so I taught that  a friend would have loved the pictures and information. But no luck they did not allow it.

Now I'm back in the motel, having dinner (cool that little kitchen) and writing this stuff. Just around the corner is a football game. I can follow the score from inside the room. Next up a good shower and some reading. I just hope I don't wake up at 4 'o clock like last night.

Loic just came in. He also went to see a movie (the new Bruce Willis). His film was shorter so he was back early and went to the stadion. He somehow got into the stadion with 3 women and looked at the last half hour of the match. He also managed to film the chearleaders so I'll try to post a small video on the webside.

Calgary Day!

September 24

For those who want to now, our windscreen is already split up to 75 cm. So we will have to pay for to replace that thing. Shit happens from time to time.

Today we took it Easy with an E in Major, and Bold. For me that is waking up, having some breakfast (waffles this time). For Loic that is going swim in the local pool. After that we went on the road again for a short trip (300km) to Calgary. We have a room booked in the oldest Econolodge in Calgary. First room we had the airco didn't function at 100% (it did not cool the room) and normally we don't complain but the reception desk called us so they new off the problem. After another 15 minutes I went to see the lovely lady and asked if they had a solution. They upgraded us to a junior suite. So for the next two days we have a suite for a little (Canadian standard) price. The difference is that in the suite we have airco (working) and a small kitchen/sallon. I should not pay the difference but when offert why not.

We had a little walk through the area but the biggest part is for tomorrow when we will visit Calgary.

24 septembre

September 23

There are times that you are at the wrong place at the wrong time ...

For today we have a tour in the Badlands and prairies planned. Not the prairies that are cultivated but those that have been in 1875 when Canada declared all the national parks in the interest of our future kids.

First off all, today we are way out of the normal tourist attractions. We have been zig zagging through the tourist route to the local, real Canada for the last 2 weeks (sinds we left Quebec) but now we really are off the 'normal' route.

The trip took us for the biggest part of the day through the badlands and prairies. I could post the 117 pictures that Loic took during the day but they do not render the real view of this part of the land. So if one day you come to Canada and you have some spare time take a day or 2 to come to this part of the country.

The best thing to view here is the Grasslands National Park (more info). Have a look at some pictures on this website. We are here in a period close to first snow. The pictures on the website show you also what it looks like in spring. We had the better view on the local wildlife ... rattlesnakes, bissons and lots more (I only mention the 2 we did not see).

After that we left the prairies behind us and went direction Calgery. That town was just out of our reach so we had to stop at Medicine Hat were we had an impulsive stop. While traveling I always wanted to try the fast food chains. Mac Donald, Burger King and co everybody knows. Last year we tried also a local brand in Australia and this time I wanted te try the Wendy's burgers (more info). And Loic was in the mood for a movie so we chose a motel (more info) in between (100m each side) First check in at the motel, after that the first fast stop from this trip (last one normally) and then a movie in the local cinema (more info). We went to see the new movie with Matt Damon - the informant. This movie has been released over here 1 week ago and it's not the next Jason Bourn ... In the beginning of the screening we were around 18 in the theater. At the end 4 but Loic and I enjoyed the movie (framed to low and the point lightly off). Knowing Kinepolis and our audience don't program this in a big screen.

One small point that was bad today, during our trip we were on smaller roads. Some idiot with a trailer crossed us and we were hit by a large number of stones on our windscreen. 3 small hits and 1 big one. After 15 seconds the windscreen had a line in it for 10cm. By the end of the day 25 cm. Now I'm curious what the result will be tomorrow morning (cold and hot are not that good).

23 septembre

September 22

Half day mmm quit a long ride to finnish after all.

Yesterday the lady in the information centre advised Loic to buy an annual pass for all the parks. So this morning the first thing we did was look into this. From now on we have unlimited access to the Canadian Parks. And that for the whole next year. Even better theses passes aren't personal. If somebody want's to borrow them héhé or come with Loic or me back to Canada.

We left the town of Wasagaming and today the only real thing that we had planned was a stop at some old grain mils. During our trip we already saw some old ones but today we came close by a place where there are 4 old ones that are fixed and shinning new. It proved out to be a nice view but not open to tourists in this period (open from 01/07 till 01/09) so we were a few weeks late.

The stop at the town of Regina, now there is not much to tell. Regina is on highway number 1. It s quit a big town (capital of something) and there a lots of motels. They are all more or less expensive. We stay at the Travelodge (more info) because it is near the exit of this town. Tomorrow we leave on highway number 6 to the badlands so this is one of the best places to leave town.

For tonight we hadn't much choice to go out and have dinner. We went to some trendy place in front of our hotel where we had a decent meal (for 65 dollars you have a decent meal) and Loic also bought some dvd's in a locel dvd shop. I have to admit a full dvd season of 'pushing daisies' + 2 DVD's for 20 euros. It is quite a good deal.

Tomorrow we visit the "badlands".

September 21

There must be some one that doesn't want us to hiking trips. Each time we plan a day for hiking it's raining. And today it was like always ... raining. We came to this region to visit the unspoiled wilderness. Well that turned out differently.

Fist stop, Moon lake. It was raining like hell and Moon Lake was more the north sea in November. Second stop, go and see the buffalos. Okay we saw one. Where all the others were is still a big mystery. After that we had a few stop to have a few short walks throug the woods/region. I tried the fist one and after that Loic tried 2 other walks. Nice but nothing more. We were back at the motel around 4 and Loic left to get some more information at the information desk while I had to do a laundry job. Traveling light is great but you need this once a week stop in a laundry shop. After that hour that was a perfect time to catch up with my personal notes I tried to find a place where I could hook up to the internet. First of all this town is almost abandoned and second they don't know how to run a business. Next to our Motel there is a restaurant where they have access to the internet. But it's in the lounge and that is only open in the weekend. If the girl had given me access to that lounge she would have sold me 2 beers... now I just left.

After that I made a little walk through town. At 6 everything is closed but it was sunny .... 12h to late. Weather forecast for the rest of the week, sunny, temperatures from 26 to 20°C.

Tonight we tried to cook in our kitchenette ... we did what we could with the limited sources we had. Due to the bad weather we had and the roads we took today our car is a disaster. I'll post a picture of it on the picture page. I think we will need to clean it before we return the damn thing.

Tomorrow another half day trip. We plan to leave this town around 11h so Loic can sleep a little longer (while I'm writing this stuff).

21 septembre

September 20

Today was what we call a half day off. When we don't have much to do (visit a small town or just do some small drive) we take the morning off. Due to the small drive of today we enjoyed the luxery of our romm until almost noon. This means Loic sleeps out late and I have some time to read.

Our goal today was the town of Wasagaming in Clear Lake in the Riding Mountain National Park. A rather small town almost 200 km from Winnipeg. Sind's leaving Winnipeg we have arrived in a whole different Canada. We are at the beginning of the prairie. Also know as one huge agriculture. For the most part of the road we just saw flat country. After spending days in the woods you should say quit a change but I do prefer the woods. What is better in that flat land is that you can see those trains from quit a distance. We made an small stop to have a look at one of those 2km long trains. It is quit a view.

Our arrival in the town of Wasagaming was a bit strange. We do not have exact maps of certain regions so there for we sometime lose some time searching in the wrong place. Today we had to find a motel outside the national park but after a while we went to ask at the town nearby and they told us that is was into the park. That way you can lose some time looking for something that isn't there.

For the next two nights we stay at the McTavish's Motel (info). And for once we have a kitchenette in the room. 2 big advantages to this room. We can cook (if we found a shop open with real food) en we have low season fares. Over here high season is over. When we arrived there were still some people. Now it's deserted.

20 septembre

Winnipeg

For the people who get my email when I'm at work there is a quote in the signature. "Never underestimate the power of stupidity of people in large groups". Never knew 2 was a large group but it is true that even 1 can be enough.

Today is our day off. We did plan some stuff for today but is is relaxing time. I did not wake up Loic at 9 o'clock but let him sleep a little longer (today I first woke up at 5 but tried to sleep until 7).  So after spending some time on the pc (I enjoyed the little chat I had this morning) Loic woke up so we had breakfast and prepared to leave. Just at that moment Dominiek connected and asked if I would not join him on his next trip. So who knows in December a little trip to Israel. I will have to take a look at who's requesting a holiday in that period at work.

Back to business, Winnipeg.

Winnipeg is a lovely town in the middle of nothing. There are lots of 'old' buildings mixed with new architecture. While walking through the old town you really enjoy the mixture of old and new. You also enjoy the invention of air conditioning. Today it was 30+ and the sun was burning like hell. Therefore we made a stop at the station. The station in Winnipeg is known for its architecture. There are some pics on the picture page. I love to wonder around in a train station. See people run to catch a train or just try to find the correct train. Well over here that is not possible. In Canada I have not found a single place where I can do that. In every station the acces to the platforms are closed. Today we got lucky because we visited the Winnipeg Railway Museum (more info). Through an opening in the wall (also called a door) we were able to get on the platform and have a few pictures . If they catch you on a platform they fine you 180 dollars. Our first plan for this trip was to take 'The Canadian' to do the overland trip. On this website you have more information. If one day you need to plan a train trip have a look at that website. Contains lots of information worldwide. So I was able to get a few pictures of the Canadian. The train arrives in town at 7h30 you have 4 hours to visit town and leave at noon. It's such a shame Canadian rail want to stop all transport of people on their tracks. But on the other hand, freight trains of 2.2 km bring more money.

On went our walk through town. And after 2h we more or less had seen it. We started our shopping time. I left Loic in a second hand bookshop and went on by myself. a few hours later we met again in the hotel. Both with less cash then in the morning and a few kg more to travel.

Our plan to go and see a movie was canceled. We both are tired and wanted to get a good night sleep. Each in his own hours. I go to bed around 22h Loic around 01h witch make me wake up early and he is still sleeping. For Sunday morning the plan is simple. Sleep out until 11h (for Loic) and we leave around noon (because we need to leave the room by then).

19 septembre
Winnipeg

The long jump²

Good morning, today we left Nipigon due to some small problems a bit later then what we had planned the day before. Even so, it was a very sunny day, we knew that we had to drive 900km  but we 'won' 1h due to changing the time zone. Now we have a 7h difference with Europe.

Not that much planned on the trip today. We just made 2 extra stops to see the local attractions. First stop at the world largest suspension foot bridge. Now I do think that there are larger ones (Dominiek can maybe confirm this). But it had a very nice setting and it was worth the stop. Even better because we had the whole thing for our self. you can feel tourist season is almost over. More information can be found on this website.

Next stop Thunder bay. At the entrance of town you have a great view over the largest lake in Canada. It even forms a huge part of the border between the USA and Canada. There is also a memorial statue for Terrance Stanly Fox. A young men who at the age of 18 lost one leg to cancer. Started a trip by foot to go from one side of the country to the other one but had to stop his effort due to cancer (which got him this time). If you like to read more about this man (more info) .

From then back on the road for the last 750 km for today. For European this is a long jump. Over here it is more than normal. It stays for us still a strange feeling to fill up the car more then once a day. Especially when you see sign no pump for 580km you think not a good road to have a flat tire ....

But this overland trip allows you to see the different regions. Okay it's just a small impression but next time I can pick just a region to go through (on a shorter trip).

For the next two night we stay at a decend hotel (our last motel was not a good one that is why I did not post the link in this blog). Friday and Saturday evening we sleep in the 3.5 star Norwood Hotel (more info). Getting there was as always a bit tricky. The maps we have aren't fully detailed so it's always some searching... We made it to the hotel around 20h. Checked in, got something to eat and then checked out the room. We've got lots of information of the lady at the desk. So for tomorrow everything is planned. Now off to bed because I'm exhausted.

18 septembre

The long jump!

We knew it would be a long jump and the weather did not make it any easier. Rain and bad winds made our 1000km a long trip. Leaving at 8h15 and stopping at 19h15 with just 2 small brakes to get some gas. Not the best way to enjoy a holiday. The good news is, we saw our first goos. Loic did not have time to take a picture (so we took a fake one for all the fans). but today we saw a real one.

Just before arriving here the sun came trough and so we had a wonderful view at one of the legs (lake Helen) of Thunder Bay.

To close of the day we went into Nipigon town to find some food. We were lucky enough to find a good dinner were we had a decent meal (no alcohol sind's they got their licence suspended). We even found a groceries shop open so we will have breakfast tomorrow morning. I already booked a hotel in Winnipeg. That allows us to take our time on the road today. Wednesday we spend 45 minutes to find a hotel. It's reassuring to have a booking confirmed.

17 septembre

September 16

Heading West

Ha today we had something new when we left the motel. Fog on the road. Now fog is something we all know but it is also something very annoying when you travel to see a country. But we were lucky after 45 min the weather became better and so we had a big sunny day.

For today we had as goal to reach Val-D'Or but on the way to there we made 2 stops around Lake Saint-Jean. Around the town of Desbiens we made a little trip to an old water dam (and power plant) and to see the 3 'waterfalls'. thank god that the scenery made up for it. The trip west took us most of the rest of the day (11h - 19h). We only stopped to refuel the car and to eat something (and to fix a broken light bulb). The views and changing nature were more than worth driving through this more northern route. For the next 2 days we chose for a less tourists trip. We wanted to see more of the inland.

But that way you sometime have strange surprises. Arriving in Val-D'or we found out that everything was fully booked. While stopping in another Motel we heard that there should stay a few rooms at the Continental Hotel (more info). We even got a explanation why everything is booming industry. At 70 km from here they are starting the construction of a new mine. So they are attracting lots of new personnel to start the whole thing up.

For tonight dinner at the restaurant (yes again) and an little bath to relax. Tomorrow we have a big drive in front of us. 1000km is our aim (Thunder bay)

16 septembre
Vers l'ouest.

The great euh .... roadtrip

This morning we left Baie-Comeau (I have a feeling I already wrote that a few times) and left quit early for the whale excursion that Loic wanted to do. Quit early... after taking breakfast, once again offert by the motel.

Loic had a brochure for a trip by Zodiac. Once found it seemed that all the information we had wasn't any longer up to date. Instead of having a trip at noon it was at 14h and they needed 4 people minimum (and he was the only one at that time). So we went on in search for another operator. With some luck (huge amount of luck) we found one at11h15. The trip left at 11h20 so Loic took all of his warm clothes and left for his trip. He had a nice trip saw some whales but missed the famous whale tale (as you can see on my pictures of New Zealand). I didn't go on this trip. I did one a few years ago in New Zealand and over there it was 15° warmer (I remember getting a nice color on that boat). So I had to wait. Had a cup of coffee and had lots of time to read.

The visit of Tadoussac was something that (for me personal) we could have skipped. For most tourist Tadoussac is the stop to visit a town way up north. All the pavement are to smouth and everything is really done for busses of tourists.

Next stop The fjord of Saguenay. Another national park where you need to pay for entrance ... but were the tickets aren't available.

On with our trip to Jonquière. A big town where there a lots of motels. We stayed at the Motel Princesse. (more info) We even had time for a normal dinner (yes we Loic ate also a normal meal). As always Loic eats more expensive and I catch up with my beer tab... I'm trying to find a beer that has more than 5° (level of a normal beer in Europe like Stella and so). Even the beer in the 3Brasseur in Montreal is lighter than it's french version.

One small point i would like to remind you of. For the first time in a week we have a mobile phone connection. Please don't call us during the night (for Europe that is before noon).  When we can't see the number we will not respond.

15 septembre

Our final hours today in the region of the Gaspésie. We were planning to leave early but that was only possible for 50%. We took time to have breakfast and after that we left for the shop ... buying some souvenirs/warm gear. Sind’s a few days the temperature is dropping. In the morning it is cold over here. Not yet really freezing but damn cold.

The trip today took us through the north half of this beautiful region. We had great views and a nice look out during the trip. The planned stops in the national park were cancelled when we were expelled by a gard. We did not have the proper ticket to visit the national park. Now how can I explain the problem. First we did not know you needed a ticket and second it is like you need a ticket to stop on a normal road. Yesterday when entering the national park we paid our entrance fee. today the national park can only be visited by a regular road that goes from north to south. So we had to do a 180° turn and head back. It allowed us to have a picnic at a little harbor At saint Annes des Monts.

Next stop Cap-Chat were you have one of the biggest vertical wind generators. We had a nice chat with the bloke how gave the guided tours (witch we did not take due to lack of time) and he told us where to go to have a good overall vieuw. And as always we went some further. Back at the entrance Loic wanted some souvenirs. So we went to the local shop. It allowed us to get all the information we needed. The wind park is functional sind’s 22 years. The big vertical turbine was installed 20 years ago. It is a prototype. After 5 years it broke down and was to expensive to get fixed. So sind’s 15 years they have the biggest broken vertical wind energy generator.

Our trip back on the ferry was also our dinner stop. Once back at the motel we updated the website with pictures and loic started the correction of the French part of this blog. He is getting faster and faster in doing it so I can write some longer texts.

Tomorrow we leave for Tadoussac with  stop for Loic where he can go see whales and dolphins. Let's hope the weather is better than yesterday and that the excursion can go as planned. On Tuesday we start or trip to the rocky mountains. On Friday we should have made it to Winnipeg and next week Tuesday we should be around Calgary. But that is a long way from here. First things first (it is Tuesday morning while I'm writing this, time for breakfast @ the econolodge).

14 septembre

September 13

Early start by accident today.

For some reason the clock on my mobile phone changed 1h hour yesterday. Already you can't make a singel call due tu network incapability now the stupid thing changes to winter hour? So I'm up early ......

Today we will e staying 2 nights in a row in the same hostel. So I took the time for breakfast. Well it has been a while sinds I had such a breakfast. I truly enjoyed it.

For today we had a few hiking trips planned.throug the beautiful region of the Gaspesie. The first one trough the southern part of the national park was a real pleasure but on the way back we noticed the weather was changing. Next stop, a small walk to a waterfall. During that trip we did see a waterfall but the worst part was that it really began to fall. Today we had our first day of rain. The second hiking trip was lost du to the rain. During the walk to the vieuw point we met a girl that is staying in the hostel as we do and she asked Loic if she could come with us to the next point on our list. As things turned out she came with us for the rest of the afternoon. It is not like we don't have enough room in the car. So if Céline reads this blog one day, it was fun having you with us that day.

Just like it was fun having a few beers and talking to some other people (daddy and daughter (hotel owner)).

Tomorrow, well be leaving back for Mattan, we take a route through the Gaspesie and have a boat trip back the Baie-Comeau at 17h. From there we start our trip down to Tadousac where we turn west for Vancouver. But that will we Tuesday evening.

13 septembre

September 12

Breakfast at the 'Château' are pancakes with maple sirop. They were delicious Another advantages is you have to leave the fortress and go to the main road for breakfast (8  9).  It gave us an early start.

Our trip started today at Pointe-à-la-garde (A small town located in the bay des Chaleurs) and brought us to the town of  Fourillon (Gaspe). Tomorrow we're going to visit the nation park over there.

The majour stops today were at Carleton and Percé. In Percé you can take a ferry to the Bon avanture island. At the time that we arrived the only excursions were those who go just round the island and dont stop on the island. Not very interesting. So we went up Mont St Anne to have a hike to 'la crevasse'. In Carleton you have a wondefull vieuw over the region (and a stupid mobil phone antenna whill you still can't make a singel call).

Tonight we are staying at L'auberge Internatinale Forillon (more info).

We are just at the entrance of the national parc and Loic has already prepared a whole trip together with the lovely lady at the reception desk. All that while I had a beer on the terras. I drive and he plans, that's the way we divide our task here.

12 septembre

September 11

waiting for the boat ... (week 1 already passed)

Today we have to boat at 14h. This means we are stuck the whole morning in this town (where there is just a harbor and some motels). In other countries we could have gone to visit something but not here. Yesterday we made the trip to the lighthouse. A small trip (80km) and that took us 1h and 30 minutes. If you can drive for more then 30 minutes without a stop for road works you are very lucky. Ok the roads over here need to be fixed, ok they suffer allot (-40° in the winter + heavy truckloads all the time) but it's getting really annoying. So for this morning we are stuck here. I woke up and went for a breakfast, Loic is still sleeping.

More to come later on the day.

It has been a very relaxing day. Around 11h Loic was awake and he found a youth hostel in the region were we wanted our next stop. I send him to the reception of our motel so he could call for a booking. That went flawless. So tonight we sleep in 'Château Bahia'.

But first we had to leave for our boat trip. Leaving the room at noon and having the boat trip at 2 leaves a small and nasty hole of 2h doing nothing. So we sat down near the beach and had a pick nic. (Breakfast for Loic). The boat trip itself is something like all those trips. You always ask yourself how they are going to get all those cars on the ferry. The 2 hour trip is a small trip, just long enough to write my journal and some postcards.

The trip crossing from Matan to our hostel took us through the inland. Autumn is well underway, the trees are already changing colors. During this journey we saw covered bridges. Still havn't found the reason why they did that.

So tonight we had a stop at the 'Château Bahia' (more info). You should check out the pictures on this on. The is the possibility to have a candlelight dinner with local food. An opportunity I took with both hands. It turned out to be a lovely evening.

September 10

Oh it's getting cold!

Yesterday i wrote here that it's cold in the morning ... well it's true what the old man told me. This morning I woke up because it was freesing cold. Not a good thing for my morning humor. Already waking up at 5 in the morning isn't a good start, having cold isn't much better. That called for a hot breakfast witch I took in the dinner where we ate yesterday evening. Opening hours for that diner 04h - 20h. I can confirm that the thing was open at 4. The whole night I heard trucks stopping for fuel and food. But breakfast made up for much. After that we went back on the road for a smooth return ride to Baie-Comeau. On the way back we had en extra stopover to have a look at the small brother of Manic 5 but it was just the same problem to get near the dam. Everything was locked down, roads blocked and everything is done so that plants cover the tracks.

For tonight I chose to motel were we are staying. I wanted one that was silend ... less noisy. (more info)

The rest of the afternoon was spend shopping (Wallmart was a big 0) and we had a small trip to the lighthouse not to far away. For tomorrow on the agenda boattrip to the other side of the river (2.5).

And for tonight, rest and a book.

10 septembre

Oh il fait froid ce matin! ...

Manic-5

Today we left  for water dam for Manic-5. (more info)

Getting there was a very nice trip to the inland of Canada. We are now on the most nothern point of our trip. Just to explain how far north just this example: first snow can drop here in 3 weeks. Already in the bing North for the moment it is hunting season. Over here it starts on the 19the of september. During a stopover at a local lake I had to chance to talk to a local Canadian. He explained a bit how things work over here in the north. He also said he want's to go see how it goes in the 'big north'.

All the equipement over here is only operable for 5 months (summer season + hunting season). After that everything is closed down for the winter (-40°C). At this point there is 1 person that stays all the time here. Some old man (daid by a 69 year old) who build himself a very nice chalet.

The man I was talking to was operating the local base for hydroplane (seaplane). Something we found during our search for good pictures of the waterdam. Sinds some idiot said that letting people getting near the dam was dangerous (for an attaque) everything is closed up, garded day and night and you are unable to get near the concrete of the dam.

The pictures you have on the picutes page have taken us quit some time.

Tonight we made a few adjustments to our travel schedule. Other wise we would be missing a few days at the end. It still be a run through the prairies (inland) but we keep a seven or eight days free for the Rocky's.

Tomorrow we go back to Baie-Comeau where we have a confirmed boat trip the day after.

Manic-5

(more info plus d'infos)

September 08

Well it has been a strange day.

This morning we left Quebec and made 2 stops. First one at the Montmonrency falls  and a second stop for a walk in the mountai area around Mont Ste Anne. For the fist stop we were a little bit urly (the bar wasn't open yet) for the second one we were a bit late. Everything was closed after the summer season. They are now preparing for the winter season.

If someone wants more information this is the website http://www.mont-sainte-anne.com

Loic and I made both a walk (not the same one) and after that we left for a car drive towards Baie-Comeau. What should have been just a 2h drive came out to be a little bit longer.

First problem we encounterd was that at a certain point the was no road. We had to take a short ferry ride to get over some fjord. Okay once on the boat it's only 15 minutes. Getting on and off took us almost an hour. A little bit later we were hold up due to an accident that happen a little bit sooner. Once again we lost some time but much less than the people that were in that car accident. For what I saw it was due to the sun the had the accident.

For tonight we are at our motel in Baie-Comeau. Tommorow we will try to get a hotel around the biggest dam in a far away corner of Canada. The map of what we planned to visit is no longer correct. Due to input from peolpe we talked to during our trip we chose to change some parts of our trip. We're now in a part that wasn't planned.

Pictures of our trip today can be found on the picture page.

A small remarque about road trips in Canada:

-don't try to find cheap fuel, everyone has the same price

-dont respect the speed limits - not a singel Canadian does it

-dont plan to drive more then 450km - todat we had 30km/h 50km/h 60 km/h 70km/h and 90km/h even on the highway they drive realy slow.

Septembre 08

Quebec City

This will be a short note in our travel diary. Today we visited the center of Quebec. First thing we did was parking the car in a official parking lot and making sure this time we dont get a ticket. After that we walked around the old harbor. Through the Old Harbor market and uphill to the old center town. While we were walking we came by the local hospital. It may seem spupid but while passing by we had to go next to a group of nurses that were smoking and having a coffee a few meters away from the entrance. It was so TV like that I had to take a picture. On went our trip through Quebec, next stop: 'La tour de 'l'observatoire' . On the 31 floor you have a spectacular view over old and new Quebec. Sind’s the whole building is having a refit finding a open entrance was quit a challenge. and the it was noon. Time for a good lunch break. We stopped at a restaurant for a good bite of food. Now Sind’s we notice that the people over here a very young we become rude and ask them 'how old they are'. The youngest today was 16. during lunch we asked some information to the oldest waitres serving in the restaurant (she was already 21 ...). In Canada you need to go to school until you are 16. You can start to work at 15 (with the ok from your parents). Something else we asked was how the hell they knew what to pay when buying something. Over here you see a price for something but that doesn't include taxes. for example our restau from today: 58.50 dollar + TF 2.93 + TVQ 4.61 = 66.04 dollar.

After this short stop we went on with the exploration of the old center of Québec. First stop Musée of the Royal 22 regiment and after that we followed the coast line to the Frontenac castle (than now is a hotel). If one day I come back to Québec with a girl that is the hotel I want to stay in. We stayed a little bit longer in the old town just wondering through the street and visiting some shops. On the way back to the hotel we stopped to do some shopping for our dinner. One of the advantages of having a car.

Tomorrow we leave the overcrowded space around Québec and Montreal and go into more normal Canadian territory.

Septembre 07

Route de Montréal to Québec

Today we have our rental car. This year I wanted a bigger car then the one we had last year. I needed a car with more luggage space. Well this year that is not a problem. Our rental car is big enough to travel with a girlfriend and 2 kids and all the luggage they have with them. This year we have a van. Not that we wanted one it was an upgrade offer.

A picture of our new toy can be found in the picture section of this website.

So sinds 10 'o clock we are free to go where we want. Only we aren't free to leave the car where we want. While visiting the old '72 Olympic village in Montreal we got a ticket for wrongfull parking. 40 Canadian dollars ...(env 25 euro) my first ticket ever. Now we need to find out how we can pay it.

After this little stop we went on heading for Quebec. Halfway throug we made a stop in a little town to have a lunch break. Saint-Anne De La Perade s what we think a typical Canadian town. We went shopping in a local shop and when I asked de girls how 'old' they were one of them proudly said 17 ... almost 18. Where is the time I was so old mmm.

Now today for the first time we have lost our sense of direction ... we've been lost in de subburbs of Quebec. The new road atlas Loic bought is not detailed enough for our purpose. We will need to find a better one for the trips that still have to come. But we found our way to the hotel and Loic has been preparing the agenda for the next few days.

1 day at a time. Tomorrow we'll visit Quebec. and after that we go on more north. But first a good night sleep.

.

This morning was scheduled for a visit of the 2 islands that are just in front of what we saw yesterday. After a nice trip in a clean and tag less metro we arrived around 10h. The walk of the 2 islands doesn't take that long. Even worse the visit to the "beach" of Montréal isn't possible. There was a big sign that sais 'beach closed, come back next year!'. Now I'm not sure we'll be back for that next year. Next stop planned was a visit of 'La ronde', We've canceled that thing when we arrived. Let's say I'll visit Eurodisney once I'm back in Europe. Back to Montréal center by métro. From there on Loic and I both went our on way. He left for the old center and I continued with another program.

A highlight for Loic was his visit to the exhibition about the Titanic. For all who know how this expo work, he is dead. At the entrance of the expo they give you a fake ticket of a passenger on the RMS Titanic. At the end you have the list of who survived and who did not. His plan to go and see a movie this afternoon didn't work out because he spend to much time in the shops... I can't blame him. I spend more than a hour writing my notes on a terras with a beer. But I did see a nice movie tonight. Vanvittig Forelsket (Love and rage) a Danish movie that was quite nice.

For tomorrow: pickup car at 10 and the trip to Quebec. Thanks to the lovely lady at the front desk tomorrow we will sleep at the Jaro Hôtel ( http://www.hotelsjaro.com )

Harbour and vieux Montréal

Sind’s this morning we have been walking around in a part of the harbour and the old city center of Montréal. On the website of Lonelyplanet.com you have this great explanation over Montréal ( http://www.lonelyplanet.com/canada/montreal )

Cities like Montréal don't happen very often. By day, it bubbles with Eurocharm and North American pizzazz. After dark, its nightlife sizzles with creativity and abandon. It's the city of a hundred nations, all lured by Montréal's intoxicating mix of Gallic tradition and joie de vivre rubbing up against North American innovation and optimism. It's one of the most fascinating urban cultures in the world - and we've barely even started.

It may seem strange that it all works so well, but it does. French, English, immigrants from all over the world…somehow it all sticks together despite the occasional frictions and flare-ups. Perhaps it's all the great food, cutting-edge culture and enduring thirst for wine that keeps the whole machine humming. Whatever it is, every Montrealer knows deep down that despite the problems the city may have, it is the epicenter of fabulousness and fun in all of Canada.

The frighteningly delicious mix of influences has turned the city into a 24-hour cultural and culinary all-you-can-eat banquet. Montréal, the cultural chameleon, has a kaleidoscope of identities: Latin capital of the north, culinary paradise, hub of hipdom, mosaic of cultures, Paris without the jet lag, to name but a few. And now the international accolades are flooding in, for everything from its culinary prowess and foodie culture to its indie music scene. Its film industry is on fire and everyone from the city's artists to actors are getting international acclaim.

Nor has Montréal's cultural pull gone unnoticed by the powerful shapers of the city's future. Montréal may never compete economically with Toronto, but when it comes to the arts, the glory days for this city lie ahead. However, the city's greatest asset is its laid-back attitude and how Montrealers manage to be sophisticated, friendly and tolerant of visitors as well as of each other. The result is a bubbling economy and a city sparkling with more energy and mischief than ever before.

Perhaps the most rewarding way to explore it all is to just throw yourself into the mix and let the crowds carry you along. No matter what you do, certainly you'll end your stay with one overwhelming desire: to return.

This text includes everything that has to be said about our impression of this town. Our hostel is only a 3 min walk from  the quartier Latin. 15 minutes from china town (where Loic had lunch ... there will be plenty of Chinese food on this trip).

After our walk throug town we went up the mountain. It is a nice walk and at the end you have a nice vieuw over the huge town of Montreal.

It is a great town and the people are very friendly. Friday evening I went to see another movie. But for some reason I got the wrong ticket with me. Without asking some lady gave me another ticket. Now okay it was not a good film. A French movie, 'Je suis heureux que ma mère soit vivante'. But where we live you don’t get tickets for free. they sell them to you!

Just for your information: first raindrops felt today during our walk to the viewpoint at 16h20. Let's hope it's not the start for lot's more.

The trip and getting to Montréal.

Hello to You all. We're off for a new trip and this time it is traveling in Canada. Over the trip to Canada I can keep it very short. Every thing went well. A short flight like this (only 8h) is easy to survive. And once you get into Montreal you get from the start a vieuw on how the people are, cool relaxed. Now sinds we are getting old ... and there is not much of a price difference we took the taxi to the hotel. We travel in style yes! And we travel in very good weather, 26° and a big sun.

Our hotel http://www.lordberri.com/ is located just at the Quartier Latin. This is know for the place to be in the evening (on thursday there was a concert of Moterhead).

We visited the place and took the time for a drink. Later in the afternoon we visited the Cinerobotheque http://www.onf.ca/cinerobotheque and went to see a movie. Loic went to see a open air screening of 2001 odysee de l'espace and I went to see "Sveti Georgije Azdahu" (St Georges tire sur le dragon) a film in competition in The World FILM Festival. I've injoyed a lot the movie. But it is very unlikely we ever gone play that film at a kinepolis.

Next up for today: Vieux Montreal and the harbor.
